The Mayan Families lives mainly in some of the poorest communities in Guatemala - like here in Xela high up in the mountains. These communities are primarily indigenous, and face their own unique challenges in addition to the country's challenges as a whole. Its 40% indigenous population faces widespread discrimination and disenfranchisement, and still feels the effects of the thirty-year civil war.
